Achewon is getting ready to kick off another great season of Chapter and Lodge activity. Attendance at our monthly chapter meetings and ceremony and drum team practices has increased dramatically since Spring Ordeals. We have several youth who are heading off to college, but a bunch of new brothers eager to step up to the plate and take on roles in various areas of the chapter. August will bring about a new program as we work on developing skills at our own Chapter Leadership Seminar. September, October and November will be busy months with everything that the Lodge has to offer plus an opportunity to work with Webelos Scout at the District Webeloree. Achewon is looking forward to all of the fellowship that the program has to offer as we make new friends and wish old friends luck on their way to higher education.
Greetings Arrowmen. Cvmpe Vekiwv has been very well represented at all OA events to date. We had Ordeal teams at the Bert Adams Ordeal and helped at Summerfest at Lake Allatoona by building bead looms and beadwork instruction. We had a great time at AAC summer camps with OA days. It was full of fellowship and ice cream. We
are working on having fund raisers, working on new poles for future
new tee pees, and had a chapter night out to go bowling. We will be
setting up our tee pees at McIntosh Reserve for a Pow-Wow in September.
We are looking forward to our camporee OA campfires. We are continuing
volunteer work at Bert Adams repairing storm damage. Attendance at our meetings has been great, we have a drum team, dance team, and arrow of light team practicing monthly. Our meetings are on the fourth Thursday nights at our new time of 6:30 pm in the LDS church on the corner of Scoggins road and Hwy 61 in Dallas.
Arrowmen from Kenesaw Chapter will join Vets Helping Vets on September 11th at noon in East Cobb Park, then go to Eastminster Presbyterian Church before 3:00 pm for the chapter meeting. Some of our members of Kenesaw Chapter earned the Chess merit badge in the first clinic for that merit badge. Members of Kenesaw Chapter at the Midnight Chess Madness class include Akhil Gupta, Sam Milam, Thomas Pochron, Daniel Schmidt, Josh Valdez, and chapter adviser Joe Bell taught the class. The "Midnight Chess Madness" clinic was held from 9:00 pm July 19 to 3:30 am July 20 at the Troop 1011 Scout Hut. The official roll out of the new Chess Merit Badge is scheduled for September 8-10 in St. Louis, MO at he grand opening of the Chess Hall of Fame. Brotherhood eligible arrowmen in Kenesaw Chapter need to register by Aug. 10th for Brotherhood Day, which will be held 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, August 20, 2011 at Perimeter Church, 9500 Medlock Bridge Road, Johns Creek, GA. Call Mr. Bell at 404-987-0246 if you need transportation to Brotherhood Day.
While not meeting regularly, Tella Qualla Boundary Chapter has still had a full summer. We are looking forward to beginning our regular chapter meetings on September 20 after our Family Fun Day. TQB will be holding its annual Family Day Picnic on Saturday, August 27, at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve in Johns Creek. In addition to food, fun and fellowship, we will be giving out feathers and other recognition for service to the chapter. Also, our renown drum team will be performing! Speaking of the Drum Team, they have been busy getting ready for Family Day, Fall Fellowship, Adventure Camp and Autrey Mill Native American Day. They have worked on the 527 Intertribal, Southern Man and polished a lot of their songs. Welcome Song and Ponca are next. We had an amazing time at Summerfest. Although the weather was hot, we had 30 members show up, including six new ones. Once more TQB had a major role in making this event a success. Mr. Ski asked that a special thank-you go out to those Brothers who worked very hard in setting up, serving and cleaning up for the meals which were, as usual when TQB is involved, EXCELLENT and in no way skimpy!!! Everyone enjoyed the day fully! Had a good time beating with all the Lodge on the big drum for powwow. This will probably become somewhat of a tradition at Lodge events...play as a Chapter and then join together for the lodge powwow. Littledeer said he liked Seasons and wanted to learn that one. Others are working on Draggin Canoe. Finally, TQB Chapter had a great time at both the Woodruff and Bert Adams Ordeals. We welcomed 25 new brothers into TQB, many of whom attended Summerfest. Looking forward to meeting all of them at our upcoming Family Day event. y.I.b
The Chuppacats are doing great. We're looking forward to our joint chapter camp out with TQB , 7 Springs, and Achewon Woapalanne on September 9th-11th. We're in the process of planing our districts Weblos Woods which we'll be running with the help of Venture Crew 42. We're continuing to work on our ceremonies team. We have practice the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Thursday of the month at Troop 116's scout hut. We're starting to put together a drum team; practice will be held during ceremonies team practice. Our next chapter meeting will be held the 14th of August at Kennesaw United Methodist Church at the same time as district round table. Thanks,
Lodge Adviser's Corner First, I would like to give a big THANK YOU to all that made the Ordeal weekend a success. Let us not let the spirit die, be proud to wear the Lodge flap, and set the example to all that come in contact with us. You, the youth, should always encourage other arrowman to attend our Lodge events if they haven’t been active for a while. Without your participation the Lodge will not function as well as it should. Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution. As you go to Summer Camp or other Scouting activities be a good representative of our Lodge and get the youth attendance up. Welcome and Congratulations to all new Brothers that completed Ordeal. We are looking forward to seeing you at Summerfest. In the meantime, if no one has informed you as to where your Chapter meets, ask your Scoutmaster for that information. When you have completed 10 months as an arrowman please seal your membership by completing the Brotherhood Ceremony. Have
a safe and enjoyable summer.
2010 Quality Lodge Quality Lodge recognition is a mark of a successful lodge with good programs, active and trained members, and a strong record of supporting the council and other branches of Scouting. Lodges that are truly successful should look at these requirements as a minimum standard of expectations of your service to the council. As such, use these requirements as a starting point in planning your goals for the year. As a new lodge officer or adviser, you may ask yourself: “Where do I start?” Yes, this list of requirements can seem intimidating at best, but this Guidebook is designed to eliminate that intimidation. As you begin to plan your new lodge yearly program, use it as a resource to establish your lodge goals, and work those goals toward achieving National Quality Lodge. Why strive to be a National Quality Lodge? Because it is expected of you! The National Quality Lodge petition was designed, not only to recognize success, but also to establish the standard for lodges in fulfilling their purpose to their council. Guide for Officers and Advisors The National Order of the Arrow Committee recently voted to make materials more readily available to lodge leaders. As a result, the Guide for Officers and Advisers is now available online. This book provides support for lodge and chapter leaders. It reflects the current policies concerning the organization and administration of the Order of the Arrow Lodge. All lodge and chapter officers and advisers should have a copy. Guide for Officers and Advisors
The National Committee of the Order of the Arrow ensured the organization’s primary duty to a Scout’s unit be maintained by the initiation of the Troop/Team Representative program. This programmatic enrichment of the Order of the Arrow and BSA has enabled a Scout to act as a liaison between the OA and their troop or team by becoming a Representative which, in addition, qualifies as a leadership position for rank advancement. In the unit, the Representative acts as a link for communication and program in service to other Arrowmen as well as those Scouts and Scouters who are not members of the organization at present. The program’s goal is to strengthen the mission of the Lodge and the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the aiding of the attainment of the purpose of the Order. The Representative’s goal is to strengthen the image of the Order of the Arrow as a program enhancement in service of the unit. For more information including responsibilities and resources vist the OA Troop/Team Representative website, or contact the OA Troop Representative Committee Chairman Will Horton. |
