First Annual Egwa Summerfest
06-29-09
July 18, 2009 at Allatoona Aquatics Base
9:00 to 5:00

The first annual Summerfest event is rapidly approaching. The event will be a fun packed day of learning everything OA and the day will end with a cookout. All new Ordeal members are strongly encouraged to attend this event to learn the history of the Order and what we do. You will also learn crafts and skills that are very useful to us as Brothers in the Order of the Arrow. You are encouraged to sign up by the deadline, July 8 and attend so that you can get a better understanding of the customs and traditions that make us Scouting’s Honor Society. Come out and learn about regalia, leatherworking, beading, feathers and all things Order of the Arrow. We cannot stress enough the importance of new members to attend this event.

Hurry up and sign up for Summerfest 2009 and learn all things OA. This is an event that will strengthen the ties of Brotherhood and make the Chapters of Egwa as well as the Lodge very much stronger. The day will be fun packed and exciting and the food will be first class. Any questions, please contact me at summerfestchairman@aacegwa.org

Our OA Trailblazer Adventure Camp will be held at BASR on Oct. 3, 2009. We will have a Vigil gathering the night before and our LEC meeting will be held on the following Sunday, so most of us make a weekend out of it.

For those of you that missed the last LEC meeting, I introduced Mr. John Guerin as our lead adviser for this event. Our lodge chief is seeking a person to be the youth event chair for this camp. If you have a young man in your chapter who you would like to recommend to have this leadership opportunity, please email Chief Rajpal Sagoo with a cc to me.

As you know, the Trailblazer Adventure Camp is very important to our lodge budget. All our event fees and dues would cost us all a little more without the Trailblazer Adventure Camp income. It is also a great service to the youngest Scouts of the AAC. We are looking for all our chapters to be involved. Each chapter should have a youth leader with an adviser to handle their part of this great event.

All the AAC Cubmasters will receive a letter from the lodge asking them to put this event on their Pack's fall calendar. We ask that you also insure that it is on your chapter and district calendars. You will be hearing more from the Mr. John Guerin and our youth Trailblazer Adventure Camp chair as this program develops and your chapter will be asked to take leadership in one or two of the events at the camp.

Cubmasters........

As you are planning your Pack’s fall season of Scouting events, please include the 2009 OA Trailblazer Adventure Camp. This event will be held at the Bert Adams Scout Reservation on October 3, 2010. In coordination with the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and our Order of the Arrow (OA) Lodge, we will be hosting a full day of great events. Your Scouts will be able to cast with professional fishermen, shoot archery and BBs, view wildlife shows, in addition to nature activities and playing outdoor games. This year we are adding some new and exciting programs for your Cub and Webelos Scouts.

INFORMATION/REGISTRATION FOR PACKS

The forms for Candidates as well as other important information
about Ordeals is located on the Candidates Page.
The information below is for Arrowmen only.

Ordeals are just around the corner… are you ready? Don’t miss out- sign up today!

The Ordeals of Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge are a great way for new and old members alike to get involved and have a good time. Chapters are always encouraged to put together ceremony teams for the pre-Ordeal, Ordeal, and Brotherhood ceremonies. Talk to your Chapter Chief or ceremony team leader if you are interested in playing a part.

Another way for members to get involved is to be an Elangomat at an Ordeal. This experience gives one the opportunity to more completely understand the meaning of the Ordeal and its intentions. As an Elangomat your job is to go through the Ordeal again, but this time as a peer and a “leader” to the Ordeal candidates. Your job is essential to the Ordeal process. Besides strengthening your understanding of the Ordeal, you help to improve the experience for the Ordeal Candidates in attendance. The word Elangomat is translated as "friend" from the Lenne Lenape. Thus, an Elangomat serves as a friend to the Ordeal candidates. During the Ordeal, an Elangomat will act as a liaison from the Lodge to the candidates, enduring every part of the Ordeal with them, and therefore strengthening their confidence.

Not Brotherhood yet? Has it been 10 months since your Ordeal? Great! Sign up as a Brotherhood candidate and come on up to seal your ties in our order. A Brotherhood candidate will have the opportunity to exercise his leadership skills, learn more about the Order of the Arrow, and become a better “Brother”. Becoming a Brotherhood member helps one to reaffirm his beliefs in the Order and is intended for those who desire to continue their path in unselfish service to others. The Brotherhood membership is not a rank but a method of strengthening ones ties in the Order of the Arrow. Brotherhood membership signifies the completion of the induction cycle.

If no other responsibility appeals to you, then just come on out! All members are encouraged to come out to the Ordeal and just help out. You will be able to assist the Lodge in putting on the Ordeal in many different ways. Your job is to make a presence and give your support to the Lodge. We always need help at Ordeals.

  • Allatoona Ordeal Schedule - not yet available.

Questions? contact the Ordeal Master, Paul Danaj.

Information for parents and guardians about Order of the Arrow ceremonies

1. Parents, guardians, and Scout leaders shall not be excluded from any Boy Scout activity or function including any Order of the Arrow (OA) ceremonies.

2. Any concerned parent, guardian, or religious leader may view any OA ceremonies, attend meetings, or read scripts upon request to a council, district, lodge, or chapter official to assure themselves that there is nothing objectionable. Such persons are asked to safeguard the details relating to ceremonies for the sake of the participants. Hazing or demeaning initiation pranks are also prohibited by the OA and the BSA.

3. Induction into the OA is not a hazing or an initiation ceremony. The OA is not a secret Scout organization, and its ceremonies are open to any parent, guardian, Scout leader, or religious leader. There is an element of mystery in the ceremonies for the sake of its effect on the candidates. For this reason, ceremonies are not held in public. The ceremonies are not objectionable to any religious group.

Rules for participating in Lodge Events

To meet BSA, Council and Lodge safety standards these rules will be followed during our Lodge events using Council properties. All Lodge and Chapter Leadership, both youth and adult are responsible for making sure that these rules are followed.

1) Anyone coming to a Lodge weekend event must pre-register and check in at the registration station set up in the dining area. Any visitors or guests that will be staying for any part of our program must also stop by this registration station. Upon check-in at the registration station, it will be determined if a medical form is needed. If a medical form is not on hand, one will be filled out or at a minimum emergency contact information will be gathered.

2) Any visitors and guests that did not pre-register may not eat meals in the dinning hall. The kitchen team is only prepared to cook for the count we give them from full weekend registrations. Visitors and guests may be restricted from the camp at certain times, such as late hours.

3) Brothers that have registered for the weekend event must also check in and out with their respective Chapter Advisers or their designee. Chapter Advisers can get a list of pre-registered brothers in attendance from the registration station. Brothers or Ordeal Candidates whose Chapter has no adult leadership in attendance at a given event will be assigned to another Chapter for oversight at that event. This assignment will be made at time of check-in with the approval of the “provisional” Chapter Adviser.

4) Brothers that have registered for the full weekend are expected to stay until the published ending time of the event. When individuals need to leave early, they should check out with their Chapter Adviser or their designee. Lodge Officers and Advisers should check out with the Lodge Adviser or his designee. Brothers under the age of eighteen must have written permission to leave camp before the published ending time of the event. This is how we keep track of who is in camp for program purposes and in case of an emergency.

5) The Guide to Safe Scouting rules must be followed at all times. All uniformed adult leadership in camp need to have completed the Youth Protection training. At no time is a Scout under the age of 18, whether they are a licensed driver or passenger, is to leave camp without parental permission granted to the Chapter or Lodge Adviser, other then at the event published ending time.

6) Chapter Advisers are responsible to make sure all their Chapter members have rides and have been picked up from camp at the end of a weekend. If assistance is needed, please contact the Lodge Adviser or his designee. This needs to be done to ensure the safety of our brothers.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Lodge Adviser Randy Yates, yates55@comcast.net
