Need You! Do you possess the dedication, time and energy to be in a youth leadership position within the Lodge? The Order of the Arrow is a brotherhood of Scout campers led and run by youth leadership and guided by adult advisers. Being a Lodge Officer will teach you a great deal about yourself and how well you can set your own goals and work to achieve them. The process for election is very simple. At Fall Fellowship, the general meeting of the Lodge will be opened. Candidates must submit a Lodge Officer Nomination Form approved by their Chapter Adviser and District Executive prior to the election. The nomination form must be turned in to the Lodge Chief or his designee prior to the election. Each candidate will be given a few minutes to speak and tell the Lodge members present why they feel they should be elected. The same process is followed for the offices of Lodge Chief, Vice Chief of Administration, Vice Chief of Program, Vice Chief of Indian Affairs, Vice Chief of Communications, and Vice Chief of Finance. A Lodge Leadership Development Course (LLD) will be held in December to instruct officers in the duties of their respective office. No officer is alone in their leadership; there are many adult advisers as well as past officers who are willing and able to help. Any youth (under 21) in the Lodge can be a Lodge officer. Take a look at the Lodge Leadership positions:
Lodge Executive Committee (LEC) The Lodge Executive Committee is the group of people responsible for all aspects of lodge operation. The LEC is the steering committee for the lodge. It carries out the business of the lodge by planning and coordinating fellowship and induction weekends, service projects, training sessions, and other events as appropriate. It consists of the elected youth officers, appointed youth committee chairman, chapter representatives, and Advisors. The LEC is conducted by Robert's Rules of Order. Please take a moment to review the following documents to acquaint yourself with Robert's Rules. The Lodge Executive Committee meets at 2:30 pm on the second Sunday of each month (except June and July) at the Atlanta Area Council Volunteer Service Center (except for September, March, and May when the LEC meeting is held in conjunction with an event) check the calendar for specific dates and location. Lodge Officer Reports Vice-Chief of Administration Brothers,
we are starting a very important year and we can use all of the
help we can get. I would like to hear from all of the chapter vice
chief of administrations, or equivalents, about the OA troop reps
in your chapter, the elangomats, and just to hear more about your
chapter. We, as a committee, will be re-looking at the Honor Chapter
requirements and will try to update what needs to be updated. I
would like to hear any questions, comments, or suggestions from
anyone. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve you and
I look forward to hearing from you. Vice-Chief of Indian Affairs Brothers, All Chapter ceremonies teams should have started preparations for Spring Powwow, Conclave, and the Spring Ordeal. I have heard from Nagatamen, Echota, TQB, Achewon, Lowanne Nimat, and Cvmpe about their teams. If your Chapter is not one of those, you need to contact me and tell me the status of your team. I have also contacted the chapters about helping with the Centennial Encampment, May 14-16, 2010. The lodge will be running a tipi village and will need the cooperation of all the chapters to be successful. If your chapter would like to contribute to the effort, contact me. All Chapters should also begin talking about Brotherhood to all those eligible. Because the Bert Adams Ordeal has been moved to November, in the Spring there will be only two opportunities to complete the Brotherhood: Spring Powwow and the Woodruff Ordeal. All eligible Brothers should take advantage of one of these opportunities to seal their membership. Yours
in the Arrow, Vice-Chief of Communications Brothers, These past few weeks have been really great for Egwa. LLD was very successful and Winter Banquet gave us all the privilege to get together in this new decade and celebrate last year’s accomplishments with great food. We will be very busy in the upcoming weeks due to Spring Pow Wow, the Ordeal, and Conclave. However, with a lot of hard work, these upcoming months can be the most exciting and promising months of the year for Egwa. In the past few weeks I have contacted all Chapters via email. This smaller email group will allow me to send out emails about Quiver deadlines and such solely to those who they directly apply to. In this Quiver we have Chapter Reports from 11 chapters. This is a great improvement from the last few Quivers. Congratulations. However, I hope to have a Chapter report from all Chapters in the next Quivers. Also, I would like to greatly thank everyone who works behind the scenes on getting these Quivers to you. Ms. Parker and Ms. Cohran volunteer a lot of time out of their busy schedules to fold and stuff these Quivers every time they are mailed out to you. In addition, Mr. Jones has been instrumental in getting the Quivers printed. YITA, Vice-Chief of Finance Brothers, I hope you all had a great time at the Winter Banquet for all who attended. There were some awesome door prizes handed out such as Spouk. At the LEC on January 10 the Norman Rockwell Patch Concept was approved and my Trading Post Committee and I will work further on improving it so that it best resembles the 100 year Anniversary of Scouting Theme. At Spring Pow-Wow we will be introducing hoodies with the Egwa Tawa Dee Logo on them and other new items. So, purchase these at Spring Pow-Wow. At Winter Banquet we held a patch auction that had both many valuable patches and some very cheap patches. It was a great success. We auctioned off $226.00 worth of patches at Winter Banquet. Again, thanks to all who participated in the auction. In the Campership Fund Patches, we sold a $35 Patch in which the proceeds go straight towards the AAC Campership Fund. In the Trading Post, we sold a total of $565.00 worth of merchandise. At Spring Pow-Wow, please come stop by the trading post to by a belt buckle or one of the new items introducing itself at Spring Pow-Wow. Happy 2010 and I hope to see you all at the February LEC at VSC. Your
Fellow Brother,
Lodge Adviser’s Corner First Congratulations to all who received an award at our Annual Banquet and a big thanks to all involved in making it a success. To the brothers who attended, and did not receive an award, you to are winners. Please inform your Brothers that did not attend that they missed a wonderful event and they need to start planning now to be present next year. As the Legend of the Order asks, Will you play the role of Chingegook who first saw the problem and sounded the alarm? Or of Uncas who cheerfully offered his services when others would not? Or will you hide in the number crowd and do nothing when your Chapter or your Lodge needs you? Above all remember, he alone is worthy to wear the Arrow who will continue faithfully to serve his fellowman. Although wearing the sash identifies a Scout as a member of the Order of the Arrow, it is his efforts to fulfill his obligation that truly distinguishes him and provides others with a meaning of the Arrow. Yours
in Cheerful Service.
2009 Quality Lodge Quality Lodge recognition is a mark of a successful lodge with good programs, active and trained members, and a strong record of supporting the council and other branches of Scouting. Lodges that are truly successful should look at these requirements as a minimum standard of expectations of your service to the council. As such, use these requirements as a starting point in planning your goals for the year. As a new lodge officer or adviser, you may ask yourself: “Where do I start?” Yes, this list of requirements can seem intimidating at best, but this Guidebook is designed to eliminate that intimidation. As you begin to plan your new lodge yearly program, use it as a resource to establish your lodge goals, and work those goals toward achieving National Quality Lodge. Why strive to be a National Quality Lodge? Because it is expected of you! The National Quality Lodge petition was designed, not only to recognize success, but also to establish the standard for lodges in fulfilling their purpose to their council. Guide for Officers and Advisors The National Order of the Arrow Committee recently voted to make materials more readily available to lodge leaders. As a result, the Guide for Officers and Advisers is now available online. This book provides support for lodge and chapter leaders. It reflects the current policies concerning the organization and administration of the Order of the Arrow Lodge. All lodge and chapter officers and advisers should have a copy. |
