EGWA SWEEPS THE SR-6S CONCLAVE

For the first time ever, a Lodge won all 5 of the Administrative Events Competition Awards and the Quest for the Golden Arrow at our Section Conclave, and it was EGWA TAWA DEE!

On the weekend of April 18-20, 2008, 118 Egwa Tawa Dee’s Arrowmen joined almost 700 Brothers from the 8 OA Lodges that made up the Section SR-6S Conclave. Chattahoochee Lodge did a good job hosting the Conclave at their Camp Lumpkin, west of LaGrange, GA. The nights were cool and days warm, making it wonderful camping weather. We had a great campsite on the banks of West Point Lake, with our own enclosed shelter and shower-house. This was the setting for our Lodge to win all of the major (non-Native American) events at the Conclave. Again this year, Egwa won the Quest for the Golden Arrow by taking first places in 3 of the 5 sporting events. Egwa will keep the award as we were told that the new Section would not be using it.

Egwa’s Lodge Conclave Contingent theme was EGWA STRONG, a take off of the ARMY STRONG theme, used with their permission. Our Conclave Contingent Leader was Cory Brown with Mr. Randy Yates as his Adviser. Special thanks to Edward Lowery and his father, Sergeant Major James Lowery, for having two US Army recruiters at our campsite during check-in as they made custom dog tags for those that wanted them. These are great souvenirs for the event.

At the Saturday night arena show they had a game called, “Are you Smarter then a Lodge Chief?” A fun take-off of the “Are you Smarter then a 5th Grader” TV show. It was a lot of fun with all 8 Lodge Chiefs on stage. And, yes, most of us are smarter than most Lodge Chiefs, but our Joseph Hawkins did pretty well.

Congratulation to all our Conclave Winners!

1st Place: Where to Go Camping Guide - Daniel Terry and Adviser John Crew.
1st Place: Lodge Newsletter - Rhys Potts, Joseph Hawkins, and Adviser Chuck Brooks.

1st Place: Lodge Display – Corey Yates, Scott Yates, Adviser Sandy Yates, with special support from John Schellack, Chuck Brooks, and Marilynn Parker.

Our Lodge Administrative Events Competition Judge was Joseph Hawkins.

1st Place - Culinary Delight - John Ingram, Scott Yates, Jake Sandlin, Nick Dean, Lonny Karl, and Damon Haynie.
1st Place - Egg Toss - Cory Brown and Scott Yates.
Dizzy Dean - Scott Yates, Colin Potts, Josh Barnard, Michael Remer, and Andrew Weaver.
Jerk Rope - Colin Potts. Our Lodge’s Quest events Judge was Corey Yates.

Egwa took second place again this year for the Section Recognition Award. We only missed frist place by 8 points out of 450 points. While this award is presented at the conclave, it is not really a conclave award as it is from points earned by the lodges throughout the year. There was no Spirit Award this year, as the Section Leadership and host lodge forgot to make the award. If they had had one, Egwa most likely would have won that again this year due to our outstanding (and loud) spirit.

Egwa had 3 PreOrdeal Teams, 1 Brotherhood Team, and 3 Vigils all Medal with Honors:

MORE CONCLAVE NEWS

Egwa's Drum and Sing Team took 3rd place. Team members where: Bradley Jacquet, Edward Lowery, Jared Finkle, Daymon Haynie, David Siester, Russell Palmer, Michael Taylor and Scott Connor. John Crew was their Adviser. Egwa's Jared Finkle took 3rd places in both Grass Dance and Grass Regalia and was a Judge for ceremonies.

Egwa’s Doug Morin was the Conclave Special Events Chair, and with the help of his Adviser, Mr. Craig Barnwell and others, they raised over $1,800 for a local charitable organization through a silent patch auction. The host Lodge was asked to pick the local charitable organization.

The Conclave Special Events hosted a pie-eating contest for all the Lodge Chiefs. Our own Joseph Hawkins almost won! Many of us have great photos of our Lodge Chief to show it! (We only hope that we will be invited to Joe’s wedding someday so we can show them to everyone.)

Our fellow Egwa Brother, Mr. Dan Musick, after many years of service as the Section SR-6S Adviser, is being replaced by Dr. James Flatt, of the Coosa Lodge, for the new Section 9. BSA Area Directors appoint the Section Advisers, and while Dr. Flatt will do a fine job, we will very much miss the fine leadership of Mr. Musick. Mr. Musick has two young sons in Scouting who hopefully, when they are OA members, will bring him out to many more Egwa events.

CONCLAVE SWEEP PATCH AVAILABLE

To document this very special event and to award all those that made it possible, a patch has been made that list Egwa’s first places in all 5 of the Administrative Events competitions and the Quest for the Golden Arrow. Our Broad-Winged Hawk is giving a broom to the Indian used in the Conclave patch design. At our May LEC meeting, these patches were attached to brooms and presented to the leadership for the competitions. Thanks to the donor, these patches are available free to all our Egwa Brothers that attended the 2008 Conclave and helped us bring home all the awards. If you have not received yours yet, ask our Lodge Adviser for yours.

Cvmpe Vekiwv Service Project

The Council Service project at BASR by Cvmpe Vekiwv continues to move along. Much has been completed to make the Program center ready for summer camp. Volunteer Arrowmen have invested more than two hundred hours renovating and remodeling the camp building. Some improvements include moving the laboratory for outside accessibility and a small kitchenette has been added to the inside. Arrowmen from our chapter will be working during the BASR Ordeal and other scheduled weekends to get it completed. Thanks to all of those Arrowmen who have help on this project.

OUR NEW OA SECTION

Egwa Tawa Dee is now in the new Southern Region Section 9 (SR-9), with nine OA Lodges. Our Section lost the Talidandaganu Lodge to Tennessee section, but gained two Alabama Lodges: Alibamu Lodge of the Tukabatchee Area Council and Aracoma Lodge of the Black Warrior Council. A new section website domain name has been reserved: www.SR-9.org, which is still under development.

The inaugural SR-9 Conclave will be held at the Comer Scout Reservation, Mentone, Alabama on the weekend of April 17 - 19, 2009. Please take note of this, and place it on your Chapters and unit calendars so we can plan another sweep of the awards next year. The host Lodge for future years will be set at the next Section Council of Chiefs meeting.

Our New Section Leadership has officers from both the new and old sections. We have five officers to lead us in our first year as Section SR-9 due to elections held in both old sections. (As per the section rules, no youth officers are to be negatively impacted by the sections realignment.) Our 2008-2009 Section SR-9 officers are:

Section Chief James Tarbox Coosa Lodge Greater Alabama Council
Section Chief Jordan Hammonds Aracoma Lodge Black Warrior Council
Section V-Chief Jonathan Stone Waguli Lodge Northwest Georgia Council
Section Sec. Dan Trust Echeconnee Lodge Central Georgia Council
Section Sec. Matt Chandler Alibamu Lodge Tukabatchee Area Council

A VERY SPECIAL KIND OF SERVICE TO OTHERS

Humans are not the only ones that can perform service to others. Service animals have been around for a long time. Our Lodge Adviser’s family is raising a yellow Labrador puppy, named Hiro, for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). CCI is a national nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of children and adults with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Hiro attended the Conclave and WSR Ordeal as the Yates family hopes that Hiro may be placed with a Scout that needs assistance. Normally, you cannot bring a dog to a Scout Camp, but service animals in training are allowed full access by law where other animals are restricted. For more information on service assistance dogs, see CCI’s website: www.caninecompanions.org
National OA Vice Chief Ben Stilwill and Southern Region Chief Mason Thomas meet Hiro at the 2008 SR-6S Conclave.

The nomination form must be turned in to the Lodge Chief or his designee prior to the election. Download our self-nomination form from the Lodge website: www.aacegwa.org

The Founders’ Award was created to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to the lodge. The award is reserved for those Arrowmen, who memorialize in their everyday life, the spirit of achievement as described by founder E. Urner Goodman. Our Lodge may petition the National Order of the Arrow Committee to present up to 3 awards annually, based on our Lodge membership numbers. Nominations are now being taken and are due by the Fall Fellowship. Download our Founders’ Award Nomination Form from the Lodge website: www.aacegwa.org

LODGE ADVISER CORNER

The Egwa Advisers have never been prouder of our youth then at the last Section Conclave. A very big congratulation to all those that worked hard to make it happen! We have some very good Lodges in our section, and the competition is tough. While our Lodge did wonderful in Administrative Events, the Quest for the Golden Arrow, and Ceremony Teams competitions, we need not overlook were we can improve. Egwa used to be the powerhouse of great Native American Dance Teams, but sadly we have not had a good dance team in many years. Native American Dance Teams help young dancers get started and allows the Lodge to put on shows for other groups. Due to the size of our council, it is hard to have a Lodge dance team, but your chapter can have one, and the best Chapter dance team can represent the Lodge at the Section Conclave. Chapter Chiefs and Advisers, please work with your members and see what you can come up with to show us your group dances at our next Spring Pow-Wow.
Yours in Service, Randy Yates, Lodge Adviser, E-mail: yates55@comcast.net

Cvmpe Vekiwv Chapter Report

Springtime is our busiest time of the year with unit elections, camporees, AOL ceremonies, conclave, and ordeals. All I can say is WOW. With successful elections and an impressive call out ceremony completed it was time for Conclave. Elangomats we could not do it without you. The T-shirts were great. With 3 brotherhood opportunities past, only 50% of our eligible ordeal members have went through. Those ordeal members who do not go through at the spring Ordeals should plan to seal their membership at the fall make-up Ordeal at Camp Allatoona.on November 8th
Our Ceremony Teams were superb. We were completely mesmerized by our Brotherhood team as they gave two academy award-winning performances. The drum added another dimension to the performance. Our hats go off to our set up teams as well. As our eyes glazed through the glaring lights of candles, smudge pots, campfire, and torches to a well lit background of our OA Flag and sashes hung over the ropes. Big thanks to Wayne Hicks and Bernie Fischer and Ricky Williams.
Also big thank you to our Arrowmen who will be participating at ArrowCorp5 in June; they are Ricky Williams, Clay Williams, Scott Conner, Zack Voyles, and Ethan Gordon. Our Chapter will continue to meet the 4th Thursday of each month through the summer months. We hope to see you. Check our chapter website calendar.

Nagatamen Chapter Report

At the Conclave, Nagatamen members received medals for our Pre-Oredal team and our new Brotherhood team was evaluated. Nagatamen has been fairly busy planning and preparing for the induction of new members this season. We have been putting together a new program to encourage long term, active membership from our brothers. This summer Nagatamen will be helping out with OA days at Bert Adams and have our Brotherhood Ceremony team and trail lined up if needed. In addition, Nagatamen will host its annual New Member Orientation at Jackson Lake to encourage active membership to our new brothers.

Tella Qualla Boundary Chapter Report

At Webelos Woods, which was hosted by our district, we cook and served lunch, and conducted a course on the transition from Webelos to Boy Scouts. That night we performed a campfire for all the cubs and their parents. At Conclave we had one ceremonialist, Colin Potts, medal in the Vigil ceremony. We also had several of our brothers compete in events including Jake Sandlin competing culinary delight, and Andrew Weaver, Michael Remer, and Colin Potts competing in Dizzy Dean. The WSR Ordeals brought us 22 new brothers and our ceremonies team did an excellent job with both Pre-Ordeal and Ordeal ceremonies. Our Arrow of Light and Crossover team performed 22 ceremonies this season and did a great job with every single one. We are also looking into a new program for brother retention, which is being reviewed by our chapter. Chapter attendance has been soaring, at our last meeting we had to find more tables to seat everyone, with our adults having to line the walls. At our next meeting we will search for a more seating arrangement as we expect to continue to gain activity.
