For A Limited Time Only
Woodruff Spring Ordeal The Woodruff Ordeal is April 30 and we are planning now to make this a memorable event for all. We are going to need as many elangomats as we can find. Elangomat in the Delaware language is translated as ‘friend’ and there is no better way to serve than to be an elangomat. We are also working on fielding eight ceremony teams, so if your chapter is planning on fielding a team, begin practice. If you want to be an elangomat, there will be training at the Spring Pow Wow scheduled for March 12 - 14 at Bert Adams so contact Scott Conner. There will also be ceremony evaluation at Pow Wow, so come prepared. We are going to bring back a long held tradition of the OA at the spring Ordeal and I look forward to seeing everyone there.—Andrew Weaver, Ordeal Master
Winter Banquet Recap
If you missed out on Winter Banquet, you missed out on a lot of great food and presentations. We met our new scout executive Tracy Techau and had many great speeches from members of our lodge and one from the former OA National Chief. The Founder’s Award recipients were awarded their awards and all past Lodge Leadership was awarded for their service.
Carolina Indian Seminar Recap The Carolina Indian Seminar, hosted by Eswa Huppaday Lodge was well attended by fifty plus Egwa Brothers. Many of our Arrowmen learned to dance, make regalia, bead, drum, and do ceremonies. The ceremony/judging classes were taught by Egwa's own Mr. Phil Holt and two beading classes were taught by Mr. Jerry Andrews. We had several of our adults dancing in some of the finest regalia seen anywhere. Our younger brothers were in the Arena practicing their newly learned moves and they plan to put those moves to good use at the upcoming conclave. Thanks to Will Hembree for serving as Youth Contingent Leader. If you missed this one, plan early for next year.
Campout
of the Century On May 14-16, 2010 at Bert Adams Scout Reservation, the Atlanta Area Council invites all Boy Scout Troops to celebrate Scouting’s Past, Present and Future on the occasions of the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and the 50th Anniversary of Bert Adams Scout Reservation. The Campout of the Century will be a Jamboree Style outing with many fun activities and an amazing Arena Show. Egwa Tawa Dee will be supporting the Encampment by providing an Indian Tipi Village. This will be an event that no Boy Scout or troop leader will want to miss. You attend this event straight through your Troop.
Lodge Officer Reports Vice-Chief of Administration Brothers,
we are starting a very important year and we can use all of the help we
can get. I would like to hear from all of the chapter vice chief of administrations,
or equivalents, about the OA troop reps in your chapter, the elangomats,
and just to hear more about your chapter. We, as a committee, will be
re-looking at the Honor Chapter requirements and will try to update what
needs to be updated. I would like to hear any questions, comments, or
suggestions from anyone. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve
you and I look forward to hearing from you. Vice-Chief of Indian Affairs Brothers, All Chapter ceremonies teams should have started preparations for Spring Powwow, Conclave, and the Spring Ordeal. I have heard from Nagatamen, Echota, TQB, Achewon, Lowanne Nimat, and Cvmpe about their teams. If your Chapter is not one of those, you need to contact me and tell me the status of your team. I have also contacted the chapters about helping with the Centennial Encampment, May 14-16, 2010. The lodge will be running a tipi village and will need the cooperation of all the chapters to be successful. If your chapter would like to contribute to the effort, contact me. All Chapters should also begin talking about Brotherhood to all those eligible. Because the Bert Adams Ordeal has been moved to November, in the Spring there will be only two opportunities to complete the Brotherhood: Spring Powwow and the Woodruff Ordeal. All eligible Brothers should take advantage of one of these opportunities to seal their membership. Yours
in the Arrow, Vice-Chief of Communications Brothers, These past few weeks have been really great for Egwa. LLD was very successful and Winter Banquet gave us all the privilege to get together in this new decade and celebrate last year’s accomplishments with great food. We will be very busy in the upcoming weeks due to Spring Pow Wow, the Ordeal, and Conclave. However, with a lot of hard work, these upcoming months can be the most exciting and promising months of the year for Egwa. In the past few weeks I have contacted all Chapters via email. This smaller email group will allow me to send out emails about Quiver deadlines and such solely to those who they directly apply to. In this Quiver we have Chapter Reports from 11 chapters. This is a great improvement from the last few Quivers. Congratulations. However, I hope to have a Chapter report from all Chapters in the next Quivers. Also, I would like to greatly thank everyone who works behind the scenes on getting these Quivers to you. Ms. Parker and Ms. Cohran volunteer a lot of time out of their busy schedules to fold and stuff these Quivers every time they are mailed out to you. In addition, Mr. Jones has been instrumental in getting the Quivers printed. YITA, Vice-Chief of Finance Brothers, I hope you all had a great time at the Winter Banquet for all who attended. There were some awesome door prizes handed out such as Spouk. At the LEC on January 10 the Norman Rockwell Patch Concept was approved and my Trading Post Committee and I will work further on improving it so that it best resembles the 100 year Anniversary of Scouting Theme. At Spring Pow-Wow we will be introducing hoodies with the Egwa Tawa Dee Logo on them and other new items. So, purchase these at Spring Pow-Wow. At Winter Banquet we held a patch auction that had both many valuable patches and some very cheap patches. It was a great success. We auctioned off $226.00 worth of patches at Winter Banquet. Again, thanks to all who participated in the auction. In the Campership Fund Patches, we sold a $35 Patch in which the proceeds go straight towards the AAC Campership Fund. In the Trading Post, we sold a total of $565.00 worth of merchandise. At Spring Pow-Wow, please come stop by the trading post to by a belt buckle or one of the new items introducing itself at Spring Pow-Wow. Happy 2010 and I hope to see you all at the February LEC at VSC. Your
Fellow Brother,
Did
You Know? In 1945 Egwa Tawa Dee was called upon to install an Order of the Arrow lodge in Rome, Georgia. A Degree Team from Egwa Tawa Dee traveled to the Northwest Georgia Council to found Waguli Lodge 318. Two years later, a Degree Team from Egwa was sent to Macon to found Echeconnee Lodge 358. Chapter Reports Announcement Attention Chapters: This is the easiest way for your Chapter to communicate to other Chapters and to the Lodge about what your Chapter has done or is planning to do in the near future. We strongly encourage every Chapter Chief or Secretary to submit a Chapter report to vccommunications@aacegwa.org by the stated deadlines.
Chapter Reports Achewon Woapalanne The Brothers of Achewon Woapalanne have added a second meeting to our schedule. We now meet every first and third Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM at Canton United Methodist Church. The first Thursday meeting we cover any business before the chapter, include a Native American game or activity, and include some time for Ceremony, Drum and Dance Team practice. The second meeting is dedicated entirely to team practices. We hope to be able to demonstrate dramatic improvement in the quality of our teams at Pow Wow, Conclave, Ordeals and other OA events. We ended 2009 with our final service project of the year - Cherokee Thanksgiving, where we helped to serve Turkey dinners to some 2,500 resident of the county and surrounding areas. Our final event was a Winter Social. We gathered at Camp Windy Waters and enjoyed a weekend of great food, fun fellowship, great food, regalia making, service, and great food. What a weekend! We are ready to jump into the new year as we complete Unit Elections and Summer Camp Promotions, District Crossover events and preparation for upcoming Pow Wow and Conclave. We have much to do and we are ready. Cvmpe Vekiwv Congratulations to all of Cvmpe. This year we were awarded Honor Chapter. It is with all of the effort of our Arrowmen, youth and adult, that this was achieved. With hard work, effort and giving back to our communities we were awarded this honor: but, with a handshake, a pat on the back, and a quiet Thank You, were the real gifts given by regular people who just get by day by day. This year’s Banquet was great. Good food and fellowship were had by all. We were represented by many brothers from our Chapter. Remember Arrowmen, this year you have only 4 opportunities to seal your membership to brotherhood. Please take advantage of the closest one available. “Arrow of Light” practice will happen on the Third Thursday of each month at LDS Church, Scoggin Rd., Dallas, GA. All arrowmen interested please come by and be on the team. Also, Ordeal and Brotherhood Teams meet and practice every Tuesday night at the Alpha Fowler Community Room. Please, all arrowmen are invited to join and become a team member. We are looking forward to next weekend’s Indian Seminar in Statesville, North Carolina. From past Seminars, I am looking to having a great time and learn much. We are hoping to see as many of you as possible. This will be money well worth spending. Echota Echota Chapter would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We have mainly discussed upcoming OA elections in order to introduce more Brothers to our chapter. We have also talked about our ceremony teams for future Scout inductions, and are looking at opportunities to help out our community. Etowah The Etowah Chapter meets monthly on the first Wednesday from 7:30 - 8:30 PM at Chamblee First United Methodist Church located at 4147 Chamblee Dunwoody Road Chamblee, GA. Egwa To Stop the Invasion! Brothers,
The Service Committee presents an opportunity for the giving of cheerful service as we are being asked to once again help stop the invasion of our National Parks by alien invasive plants. These invasive plants must be eliminated so that the local ecosystem can survive. On Saturday, March 6, 2010 Brothers from Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge will assemble with Scouts from across the Atlanta Area Council at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area to identify and remove these invasive plants. Registration begins at 8am with a work period beginning at 9am and again at 1pm with the closing at 4pm. So plan for a half day or the whole day but plan on giving some service on this day! The assembly location and additional information will be provided as it becomes available. Questions can be directed to the Service Committee Adviser “Mac” McKinley at macjan@bellsouth.net or 404-361-0730(Home).
Lodge Adviser’s Corner First Congratulations to all who received an award at our Annual Banquet and a big thanks to all involved in making it a success. To the brothers who attended, and did not receive an award, you to are winners. Please inform your Brothers that did not attend that they missed a wonderful event and they need to start planning now to be present next year. As the Legend of the Order asks, Will you play the role of Chingegook who first saw the problem and sounded the alarm? Or of Uncas who cheerfully offered his services when others would not? Or will you hide in the number crowd and do nothing when your Chapter or your Lodge needs you? Above all remember, he alone is worthy to wear the Arrow who will continue faithfully to serve his fellowman. Although wearing the sash identifies a Scout as a member of the Order of the Arrow, it is his efforts to fulfill his obligation that truly distinguishes him and provides others with a meaning of the Arrow. Yours
in Cheerful Service.
The Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s national honor society, its purpose, to serve the scouts, troops, and communities it is associated with. As you read this letter keep in mind that it is your obligation to keep cheerful service in mind.
